Birthday Star Map of the Day They Were Born
What did the sky look like the day they were born? Almost nobody knows, which is what makes a birthday star map a gift they have never seen before. It shows the stars above their birthplace on their birth date, at the hour they arrived if you know it, drawn from a real astronomical catalog and set beneath their name. It works for a child's first birthday and for a grandmother's ninetieth, because every year from 1900 to 2100 is supported. You design it free in the browser, see the complete map before you decide, and receive the files in minutes or a framed print at your door.
Why a star map for a birthday
Birthday gifts get harder with every year. By forty most people have what they need, and by seventy they have started giving things away. A star map sidesteps the problem entirely. It is not a possession so much as a fact about them, presented well: this is the sky you were born under.
It suits milestone birthdays especially. A 30th, 50th or 80th invites a bit of reflection, and a map of the birth sky gives that reflection a place to land. Grandparents in particular respond to it, partly because the date is so far back that it feels like history, and partly because nobody has ever thought to give them one.
It also solves the shared-gift problem. Siblings can go in on a framed print together, and the result looks considered rather than expensive.
Which moment to choose
- The birth date and time. The obvious choice. A birth certificate usually has the time; failing that, ask their mother.
- The birth date at midnight. If nobody knows the time, midnight gives a clean night sky for that date.
- The birthday you first spent together. For a partner, the first birthday you shared can mean more than the birth itself.
- The milestone itself. For a 50th, some people map the sky on the night of the party, as a record of the celebration rather than the origin.
What to write on it
- Margaret / born under this sky, 4 May 1946
- Happy 30th, Leo / the day the world got brighter
- Fifty years / and the stars have barely moved
- Noah's first birthday / one whole trip around the sun
- For Dad / the sky on your very first night
Which design fits
- Eclipse places a dark circular sky against a light ground, with a fine ring of light at the edge. It is graphic and modern, and it suits younger recipients and contemporary rooms.
- Noir is the darkest of the designs, near-black with sharp white stars and minimal type. It is a strong choice for a man who says he does not want anything.
- Galaxy softens the sky with a luminous band and reads as warmer. It is the usual choice for a mother or grandmother.

Questions about the birthday star map
Is the sky on the map accurate for a birth date decades ago?
Yes. The map is computed from a published star catalog for the date, time and place you enter, precise to the minute, for any date between 1900 and 2100. The positions of the stars relative to one another change so slowly that a 1940s sky is rendered as reliably as one from last week.
Can I make a star map for a milestone birthday like a 50th or 80th?
Yes, and these are among the most popular maps we make. Enter the original birth date and the map shows the sky on the night they were born. Add a line such as "eighty years under these stars" to tie it to the occasion.
Their birthday is tomorrow. Is it too late?
No. The digital map arrives by email within minutes, so you can design it tonight, print it at home or at a print shop in the morning, and frame it locally. If you want our framed print, allow 7 to 12 business days and give the digital file in the meantime.
I do not know what time they were born.
That is fine. Enter the date and leave the time at the default, or set it to midnight or 10 pm, and the map shows the sky for that night at that place. The difference between hours is a rotation of the star field, not a different set of stars, so the map remains correct for the date.
Does the birthplace matter, or can I use where they live now?
Use the birthplace if you know it. The map is drawn for a specific latitude and longitude, so a birth in Manila and one in Manchester on the same date produce different skies. The city is enough; a street address changes nothing visible.
Can I add a photo?
Yes. For $19 you can place a photo of them on the map, and the designer shows how it sits with the sky before you decide. A baby photo beside the birth sky is a common choice for a milestone birthday, and a recent photo works well for a younger recipient.
Will they understand what it is?
The map carries the date, place and coordinates beneath the sky, so the meaning is on the piece itself. Most people also add a title and a line of text, and the combination of name, date and sky is self-explanatory. A short note in the card helps for a grandparent who has not seen one before.
Can I see it before I buy?
Yes. The designer shows the full map as you build it, with the date, place, words and design applied, and every change appears immediately. There is nothing to sign up for and no payment until you are satisfied, so you decide on exactly what they will receive.
