Moon Star Map

The chart is the real sky. We compute the position of roughly 9,000 stars and all 88 constellations for your coordinates and your minute, for any date from 1900 to 2100, from the HYG star catalog. What you see in the circle is what someone standing at that place, at that time, with a clear view of the whole sky, would have seen overhead.

The moon itself is a photograph and a design element. It does not show the real phase of the Moon on your date, and it is not placed where the Moon was in that sky. We say this plainly because a few competitors let customers believe otherwise. If the phase matters to you, the date line beneath the map is the accurate record; the disc is the art.

• A new baby. The moon is the first thing in the night sky a child learns to name, and the design is soft enough for a nursery wall. Set the time to the minute of birth and the title to their name.

The poster ground is pure black. The moon is rendered in its natural greys, from bright highlands to the darker maria, with the halo fading into the black around it. Stars are white and the constellation lines are white too, kept thin so the lunar detail shows through them. Title and details are set in a warm off-white.

On our semi-gloss paper the greys of the moon print with real depth, and the black stays black. At home, this is a design to print on photo paper; the tonal range of the moon is lost on plain stock. The black wood frame we ship continues the poster's ground, so the moon appears to float in a dark field on the wall.

It looks best where the wall is light and the room is calm: a nursery, a bedroom, a hallway. It is one of the few dark designs that does not feel heavy in a pale room, because the moon itself is bright.
