Star Map Sizes — Which Size Is Right for Your Wall

The digital order ($25) includes all three sizes as PNG and PDF. Framed prints are ordered in one size and arrive mounted in a black wood frame with an acrylic front and hanging hardware fitted.

All three are stock frame sizes in the US. 12 x 16, 18 x 24 and 24 x 36 frames are sold off the shelf at large stores and online, in every style from plain black to natural oak, which means a printed star map can be framed the same afternoon without a custom order. If you prefer a mat, look for a frame one size up with a mat cut to your print size, for example a 16 x 20 frame with a 12 x 16 opening; a mat suits the pale paper and heart white designs particularly well.

12 x 16 in: the desk, the shelf, the small wall. This is the size for a bedside table, a bookshelf, a hallway, a nursery wall beside the cot, or an office desk. It is also the size a home photo printer can approach, and the one most people choose when the gift needs to be portable. The constellation lines and the text are clear at arm's length.

18 x 24 in: the everyday wall. Above a dresser, a console table, a small sofa, or as the anchor of a gallery wall, 18 x 24 is the size that reads from across a normal room without dominating it. If you cannot decide, choose this one.

24 x 36 in: the statement wall. Above a large sofa, a bed, or a mantel, hung alone with space around it. At this size the star field has real depth, the fainter stars become visible, and the map becomes the room's focal point. It needs a wall that can carry it; in a small room it can feel like too much.

Stand where you will normally see the map, and measure the distance to the wall in feet. Divide by two. That is roughly the longest side of the print, in feet, that will look right from there. From six feet away, a print around three feet on its longest side (24 x 36) fills the view comfortably; from four feet, 18 x 24; from two or three feet, 12 x 16. It is a guide, not a law, and the size of the surrounding furniture matters as much as the distance.

Two more practical checks: hang the centre of the map at about eye height, and if it is going above a sofa or a bed, aim for the print to be roughly two-thirds the width of the furniture beneath it. 24 x 36 above a wide sofa and 18 x 24 above a dresser both follow that rule naturally.

The files are proportioned 3:4. A-series paper is proportioned 1 to the square root of 2, which is a little narrower. So A3 (29.7 x 42.0 cm) is close to 12 x 16 in, and A2 (42.0 x 59.4 cm) is close to 18 x 24 in, but neither is identical. If you print the 12 x 16 file on A3, or the 18 x 24 file on A2, ask the printer to fit the image to the sheet without cropping; you will get a small white margin on two sides, which disappears behind a mat or a frame lip. Do not let the shop stretch the image to fill the sheet, because that distorts the map. Frames in A-series sizes are widely stocked in Europe, and a mat cut to the print's true size makes the difference invisible.
