Duotone Star Map: One Sky, Split Between Night and Day
Duotone splits the sky in two. On a warm off-white poster, the circle of your exact date and place is divided down the middle: one half is black with white stars and pale lines, the other is pale with dark stars and grey lines. The constellations run straight across the seam, so the map reads as one sky seen two ways. It is the most graphic design in the set, the one that looks like a piece of modern print rather than a chart, and the natural choice for a long-distance couple or anyone who wants a star map that does not look like every other star map.
What the Duotone design shows
The chart is the real sky, computed exactly as on every other design: around 9,000 stars from the HYG catalog down to magnitude 6.5, all 88 constellations with their official line figures, placed for your coordinates and your minute, any date from 1900 to 2100. The split is purely visual. The stars do not move; only the colours flip at the centre line, so a constellation that crosses the middle is drawn half in white on black and half in black on cream.
The effect is strongest with the constellation lines on, because the lines make the continuity across the seam obvious. With the lines off, the two halves read as two fields of dots that happen to meet.

Colours, paper and framing
The ground is a warm off-white. The right half of the disc is black with white stars and pale grey lines; the left half is the same off-white as the poster, with near-black stars and mid-grey lines, so the pale half of the circle is defined by its ring and its stars rather than by a fill. The title and details are drawn in two tones as well, dark over the light half and light over the dark half.
Duotone prints well at home on a heavy matte paper: the dark half is small enough to fill evenly and the pale half needs almost no ink. Our framed print on semi-gloss paper in a black wood frame gives the black half real depth and makes the seam crisp.
On the wall it suits modern rooms, white walls, concrete and pale wood. It is a design to hang alone; it has enough going on that it does not need company.

Questions about the Duotone design
Do the two halves show two different skies?
No. It is one sky, one date, one place, drawn in two colour schemes. For two places on one poster, order two maps, or use the subtitle to name both cities.
Do the constellation lines cross the middle?
Yes. A constellation that straddles the centre line is drawn continuously across it, in white on the dark side and in black on the light side.
Which side is dark?
The left half is light and the right half is dark on every Duotone map. This is fixed so the design stays consistent in print.
Does it print well at home?
Yes. The dark half is small and the light half needs little ink. Use a heavy matte paper for a clean seam.
