Heart Star Map

The sky inside the heart is real. We compute the positions of around 9,000 stars and all 88 constellations for your coordinates and your minute, from the HYG catalog, for any date between 1900 and 2100. The heart is a window onto that sky: the part of the dome that falls inside the shape is drawn, and the rest is cropped away, so the constellations you see are the ones that stood overhead at your moment.

Because the heart is narrower than a circle, a few constellations near the horizon may fall outside the shape. If seeing the full dome matters more than the shape, the Navy, Noir or Galaxy designs show the whole sky in a circle.

• Engagements. The night of the proposal, in the shape that needs no explanation. Set the time to the minute if you know it.
• Valentine's Day. The obvious choice, and still the right one: the black ground keeps it from looking sugary.
• Weddings. As a gift for the couple, or as a piece for the reception table with the ceremony sky inside it.

For a lighter room, the same heart is available on an off-white poster as Heart White. For a heart in red, Crimson uses a circle rather than a heart but carries the colour.

The poster is pure black, the stars are white with a faint tint from each star's real colour, and the constellation lines are a light grey that reads as silver on the page. The title is set in white capitals above the heart; the details beneath it are in a soft grey.

Black posters need ink coverage, so for a home print use a heavy matte or satin photo paper and the printer's photo setting. Our framed print uses semi-gloss paper in a black wood frame, and on that combination the heart looks as though it was cut out of the frame itself.

On the wall, Heart is a bedroom design first: above the bed, on a dresser, beside a mirror. It also works as a small framed piece on a desk, which is why 12x16 is the size most people order for it.

Keep the title short; a long line above a heart pushes the shape down the page. The subtitle can carry the detail.
