How to Gift a Digital Star Map — Five Ways to Hand Over a File

1. Print it yourself. The most straightforward and still the best. Print the 12 x 16 file on photo paper at home, or send the 18 x 24 PDF to a drugstore, office-supply or photo counter for same-day pickup, and put it in a stock frame from the same trip. 2. A card with a QR code to the map. Write a card by hand and, inside, add a small QR code that opens the map's share link on their phone. Any free QR generator makes one from a URL in seconds; print it small, cut it out, and glue it inside the card. They read your words first, then scan, and the sky from that night opens in their hand. It works especially well when you are apart, or when the printed version is on its way and you want them to see it now.

3. An email scheduled for the morning. Most email apps can schedule a send. Write a short message, attach the PNG or paste the share link, and schedule it for the hour they usually wake up on the day. Say when the sky was and why you chose it, and leave the map to do the rest. It is the quietest of the five and suits a long-distance relationship, a friend abroad, or a parent who checks email before anything else.

4. Frame it locally, the same day. If the date is tomorrow, this is the plan. Order the files, upload the PDF to a photo counter that offers same-day posters, choose a matte or semi-gloss finish, and buy a 12 x 16 or 18 x 24 frame while you wait. Both are stock sizes. You can walk out with a finished, framed gift in an afternoon.

5. Show it on a screen. Open the PNG full-screen on a tablet, or cast it to the television, and hand it over or turn the screen toward them at the right moment. The dark designs (galaxy, navy, noir) look striking on a screen in a dim room. Tell them the print is on its way. This is also a lovely way to reveal a framed order that is still in transit.

When there is no time to print the map itself, print a card. Fold a sheet of card stock, and on the front write or print one line: the date, or the place, or simply "the sky that night". Inside, a sentence or two about the moment, and either a small print of the map (the 12 x 16 PNG scaled to fit a quarter page is plenty) or a QR code to the share link. Hand it over at breakfast. The card is the gift's body; the map arrives behind it, on paper or on a wall, in its own time.

This week. You have time to do it properly. Order the files and send the PDF to an online photo lab for a lustre or fine-art print, which typically ships in a few days, or order the framed print directly if the date is more than 7 to 12 business days away. Either way, prepare a reveal card in case shipping runs close.

Further out. Order the framed print. It arrives printed on heavyweight semi-gloss paper, mounted in a black wood frame behind acrylic, with the hardware fitted. Nothing to do on the day but hand it over.

The map already says the date and the place. Your words should say why. A few lines are enough, and plain is better than grand:

• The sky over the church at 3:40 pm. I was not looking up. I was looking at you.
• This is what was above the hospital at 2:12 in the morning, the minute you arrived.
• You would not remember the stars from that night. I checked. Here they are.
• For the first year. Paper, as tradition asks.
• For Dad. The sky over the house the night you were born, 1951.

On the map itself, keep the title short (names, or a single phrase) and let the subtitle carry the date or the place. For a memorial, a name and a date is often all that is wanted; the memorial page has more on tone.
