Valentine Star Map

The sky inside the heart is real. We compute the positions of around 9,000 stars and all 88 constellations for your coordinates and your minute, from the HYG catalog, for any date between 1900 and 2100. The heart works as a window onto that sky: the part of the dome that falls inside the shape is drawn, and the rest is cropped away, so the constellations you see are the ones that stood over you at your moment.

Because a heart is narrower than a circle, a few constellations near the horizon may fall outside the shape. If seeing the full dome matters more to you than the shape, Crimson carries the same red in a circular chart.

The poster is a deep wine red, not a bright red, so it feels rich rather than loud. The stars are white, the constellation lines a pale pink, and the heart's outline and the north and south marks a soft light tone. The title is set in white capitals; the details beneath it are in a light rose.

Deep colours need ink coverage, so for a home print use a heavy matte or satin photo paper and the printer's photo setting. Our framed print uses semi-gloss paper in a black wood frame, and against the black frame the red reads as warm and deep.

On the wall, Valentine belongs in a bedroom or a dressing area: above a bed, on a dresser, beside a mirror. As a 12x16 it also sits well on a nightstand or shelf.
