Anatomical Star Map

The sky inside the heart is real. We compute the positions of around 9,000 stars and all 88 constellations for your coordinates and your minute, from the HYG catalog, for any date between 1900 and 2100. The anatomical heart works as a window onto that sky: the part of the dome that falls inside its silhouette is drawn, and the rest is cropped away, so the constellations you see are the ones that stood over you at your moment.

The silhouette is narrower than a circle and has the arteries at the top, so some constellations near the horizon fall outside it. If seeing the whole dome matters more to you than the shape, Paper and Navy show the full sky in a circle.

The poster is a warm off-white. The heart's sky is a deep navy, almost black, with white stars and light grey constellation lines, and the outline of the heart is drawn in a fine dark line. The title is set in dark capitals; the details beneath it are in a soft grey. The contrast between the pale paper and the dark heart is what makes it read from across a room.

For a home print, use a matte photo paper and the printer's photo setting so the navy prints deep. Our framed print uses semi-gloss paper in a black wood frame, and the black frame echoes the dark heart.
